Gamecocks beat Presbyterian, 6-1

Junior left-handed pitcher Steven Neff limited Presbyterian to just one run on five hits in five innings of work as third ranked South Carolina bounced back on Tuesday with a 6-1 win over the Blue Hose on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks are 38-10 while Presbyterian drops to 20-29 for the season. Carolina is back in action on Wednesday night hosting Charleston Southern at 7 p.m.

Making his first start since April 12 at The Citadel, Neff had a solid outing as he limited the Blue Hose to a single run in the fifth inning. Neff struck out five and walked just one. With the win, Neff improves to 3-1 on the season. Presbyterian starter Bud Jeter suffered the loss and is now 5-6 on the year. He allowed four runs on four hits in four innings of work.

South Carolina broke ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Scott Wingo walked with one out and advanced to third base on Christian Walker’s double down the left field line. Brady Thomas would drive Wingo in with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Carolina extended the lead to 2-0 in the second inning. Adrian Morales led off with a single followed by a walk to Evan Marzilli. Morales would then score on a one-out base hit by DeSean Anderson to center field. Presbyterian cut the lead at 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Brandon Paul doubled to right field with one out and scored on John Wagner’s two-out RBI base hit down the right field line.

Carolina answered though in the bottom half with a pair of runs to go ahead 4-1 on the Blue Hose. Anderson led off with a walk and Mooney singled to give Carolina a pair of runners. With one out and both in scoring position, Walker drove a RBI base hit up the middle to score both runners and give the Gamecocks a three-run cushion. That lead was pushed to four runs in the sixth inning as Robert Beary doubled to left field and eventually scored on Peter Mooney’s sacrifice fly to center field. .Mooney drove in his second run of the game on a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning that made it 6-1.

Mooney and Walker each had two hits with two runs batted in to lead the Gamecocks at the plate. South Carolina out-hit the Blue Hose 9-6 on the evening.
