CofC's Goudelock named Player of the Year

The Southern Conference Sports Media Association selected the its 2010-11 men’s basketball all-conference teams and postseason awards. In voting that mirrored the league coaches’ all-conference selections, College of Charleston’s Andrew Goudelock was named the league’s Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year while the Cougars’ Bobby Cremins was named the Anton Foy Coach of the Year. Western Carolina guard Trey Sumler was named the league’s Freshman of the Year.

Goudelock leads the Southern Conference and ranks fifth nationally with 23.0 points per game. He has knocked down over 40 percent of his shots from three-point range and ranks fourth in the nation with 3.4 made triples per contest. Goudelock has scored at least 20 points 23 times this season, including 13 of 18 SoCon games.

Cremins guided the Cougars to a share of the South Division title in 2011, marking the first time College of Charleston has been atop the South Division standings since 2004. He earned the Anton Foy Award on three occasions (1976, 1978, 1981) while coaching at Appalachian State earlier in his career.

The league’s media association also selected three all-conference teams. Goudelock earned first team honors along with 2010 Malcolm U. Pitt Player of the Year Donald Sims, The Citadel’s Cameron Wells, Furman’s Amu Saaka, and Wofford’s Noah Dahlman.

Omar Carter (Appalachian State), Chris Long (Elon), Keegan Bell (Chattanooga), Omar Wattad (Chattanooga) and Mike Williams (Western Carolina) were named to the second team.

The all-conference third team team consists of Donavan Monroe (College of Charleston), Jeremy Simmons (College of Charleston), Ben Drayton III (Georgia Southern), Tim Johnson (Wofford) and Cameron Rundles (Wofford).

Western Carolina’s Trey Sumler was named the league’s Freshman of the Year. The Catamounts’ second leading scorer (11.5 ppg), Sumler made 21 starts and scored in double figures in 17 games for WCU. He was joined on the all-freshman team by Trent Wiedeman (College of Charleston), Jack Isenbarger (Elon), Eric Ferguson (Georgia Southern) and Trevis Simpson (UNCG).

The 2011 Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament begins Friday, March 4 at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. The league’s championship game will be tip off Monday, March 7 at 9:00 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2.
