Roethlisberger suspension reduced to 4 games
NEW YORK (AP) Ben Roethlisberger's suspension has been reduced from six games to four by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Pittsburgh Steelers' star quarterback met with Goodell early today and was told he could return on October 17th against Cleveland.
When Roethlisberger was suspended in April for violating the league's personal conduct policy, Goodell said he would review the player's behavior over the next few months. Goodell was satisfied that Roethlisberger has followed the league's guidelines and stayed out of trouble.
Roethlisberger was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student following a night of drinking in a Milledgeville, Ga., bar on March 5. He was not charged by Georgia authorities.
While he is out, Roethlisberger plans to work with a California-based quarterbacks coach, George Whitfield, and he'll throw to some free-agent receivers who are looking for work in the league.
Phils come home to face Brewers
PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Philadelphia Phillies are back home after their make-up game yesterday in Colorado, and are set to host the Milwaukee Brewers starting tonight at Citizens Bank Park.
Phillies starter Cole Hamels will be hoping his teammates continue their offensive surge in the last few days. He is 8-10 on the season, but with an ERA of 3.31 he's been a victim of poor run support at times this season.
Milwaukee will start Chris Capuano, a free agent after the season who will be looking to impress. He is 2-2 and is coming off a start that lasted just 3 innings, against the Pirates.
Chase Utley had a grand slam and drove in a total of six runs last night to pace the Phillies past the Rockies, 12-11. Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth also went deep in a nine-run seventh inning.
Pirates, Duke open Nats series
PITTSBURGH (AP) Two teams bringing up the rear in the National league standings -- the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals -- go head to head starting tonight at PNC Park
The Pirates will start Zach Duke in tonight's opener. He was in line for a win in his last outing but the Bucs' bullpen faltered against the Brewers.
Livan Hernandez will be starting for the Nats -- his first start since signing an extension. Hernandez began the year not even being guaranteed a roster spot but has had a solid year. The Nats are also dealing with an injury to prized rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who is having Tommy John surgery today.
Pirates' second baseman Neil Walker has hit four of his nine homers this season in the last five games, and he is batting .425 with 14 RBIs during a nine-game hitting streak.
Frosh QBs highlight YSU-PSU season opener
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) No. 19 Penn State won't be the only team Saturday at Beaver Stadium starting a freshman quarterback.
The Nittany Lions' opponent, FCS school Youngstown State, should have a much more difficult time getting going behind its new quarterback, redshirt freshman Kurt Hess. Penn State might overwhelm the Penguins with too much talent.
Penn State plans to start Robert Bolden at quarterback. He'll be the first true freshman signal-caller to start a season opener in Hall of Famer Joe Paterno's 45 years as head coach.
Bolden, though, is expected to share playing time with the two players he beat out in sophomores Matt McGloin and Kevin Newsome. Paterno wants to build confidence in his quarterbacks with a tough game looming in Week 2 at Alabama.
Temple Owls hope to rule MAC roost
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Temple and Villanova open their football seasons tonight, facing each other in the second annual Mayor's Cup game at Lincoln Financial Field.
Villanova took last season's matchup, 27-24, and went on to win the FCS national title. The Wildcats are considered a solid shot to repeat as well, but Temple has high hopes. The Owls have been picked to win the MAC and are touting Bernard Pierce as a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. Pierce had 1,361 yards rushing along with 16 touchdowns last year.
Villanova will be looking for another strong year from quarterback Chris Whitney, who threw for 278 yards in last year's win.
NCAA slaps postseason ban on Lincoln U. athletics
PHILADELPHIA (AP) The NCAA has found major and secondary violations in Lincoln University's athletics program and is barring its teams from postseason play.
The NCAA Division III committee on infractions ruled Thursday the school violated eligibility rules in men's track and field, cross country, basketball and soccer, along with women's volleyball.
Besides three years of probation and the postseason ban, Lincoln's basketball and track and field teams cannot appear on television. The NCAA says the school let 27 student-athletes compete, practice and receive travel-related expenses despite being ineligible between 2003-2009.
Michael B. Hill, the university's executive vice president, says the school agreed with the findings. "It is a closed issue and we are moving forward," he says in a memo sent to university faculty, staff, students and alumni on Friday.
Penguins sign F Mike Comrie to $500,000 contract
PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Mike Comrie to a $500,000, one-year contract, giving them a proven scorer who might be capable of playing on one of their top three lines.
The Penguins, looking for affordable scoring help because they have little salary cap space, signed forward Arron Asham to a $700,000, one-year contract two weeks ago.
Comrie has scored 20 or more goals five times during nine NHL seasons with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa and the New York Islanders. He has not scored more than 13 goals since 2007-08.
Comrie will join the Penguins several months after marrying actress Hilary Duff.
Drexel moves on from arrest
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Drexel coach Bruiser Flint says he's still shocked two of his players were arrested this summer.
Starting point guard Jamie Harris and backup forward Kevin Phillip face robbery, theft and weapons charges. They were indefinitely suspended in July.
Flint and the Dragons tried to put the disappointment behind them with an overseas trip to Turkey. Flint returned Monday night and was back in his office and ready to hit the recruiting trail Wednesday.
Flint said Thursday the exhibition tour was a needed glimpse at what his team will look like without Harris. Harris started all 32 games for the Dragons last season and averaged 14.5 points.
Flint says the Dragons are ready to move on with the players they have.
Mining activists demand WVU, Nike pull uniform ad
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) Mountaintop removal mining activists are demanding Nike pull its promotional ad for a new West Virginia University football uniform because it features a strip mine.
The gear was designed in tribute to 29 men killed in the Upper Big Branch mine explosion. But activists point out the mine was an underground operation.
They say the ad suggests WVU and Nike endorse the controversial form of strip mining, and Webb wants apologies to the people harmed by such mines. The WVU athletic department says the intent was to honor coal miners and their heritage.
The gear will be worn for only one game this season -- the Backyard Brawl on November 26th against Pittsburgh.
The off-white clothing is intended to appear coated in coal dust, and the number 29 is on the coal-black helmets.
