Former Family Circle Cup Champion joins the field for the 2010 Charleston event.
Jelena Jankovic, the World No. 8 ranked player and 2007 Family Circle Cup Champion, has officially entered the 2010 Charleston event.
Jankovic joins World No. 1 Serena Williams, World No. 3 Caroline Wozniacki, World No. 6 Victoria Azarenka, former World No. 1 Maria Sharapova, 2008 Family Circle Cup Finalist Vera Zvonareva, and 18-year-old American standout Melanie Oudin in a world class player field marking the tournament’s 38th consecutive year and 10th year in Charleston.
The Family Circle Cup, a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Premier Event, is scheduled April 10-18, 2010 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in historic Charleston, South Carolina.
“Jelena Jankovic has built a strong fan base in Charleston. Her big ground strokes, athleticism, and personality make her a thrilling player to watch,” said Eleanor Adams, Family Circle Cup Tournament Manager. “We’re always glad to welcome back a former champion, and with the addition of yet another Top 10 player, our player field is really coming together for our 10th year in Charleston celebration.”
Throughout her 10-year career on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, Jelena Jankovic has notched 11 singles titles, 378 singles victories, over $9.4 million in prize money, and finished a season as the World No. 1 player (2008).
Jankovic has made five previous appearances in Charleston where she has accumulated $222,135 in prize money, an 8-4 record, and a singles title in 2007. Her Cup earnings rank her at No. 19 among all-time Family Circle Cup money leaders.
“Charleston is such a beautiful city, and I always have so much fun there,” commented Jelena Jankovic. “My Family Circle Cup championship meant a lot to me, and I’m very excited to return for another shot at this historic title.”
