Recent crime data from the City of Charleston is encouraging. But the crime of sexual assault continues to be difficult for police to investigate. Of the 30 sexual assaults reported all but 2 were strangers to the victim.
Melona Marek from PAR or People Against Rape, is always looking for the opportunity to set the record straight. This when it comes to, what are called acquaintance rapes.
They are the most common from sexual assaults. And they are difficult to investigate once reported and harder still, to get enough solid evidence and a conviction in court.
The crimes are often categorized, indicted by how the crimes are described in a recent news release from the City of Charleston Police Department.
“I know what chief Mullen is saying in this release and alcohol is a big problem. But this makes it sound like there were 30 sexual assaults in the city of Charleston and twenty of them were acquaintance rapes ergo: 28 of them were women out drinking with men then they got raped. And that's not exactly what it was, it's a little bit more than that.”
The reason they are a bit more, is because an acquaintance can be many things. And it's an issue Marek says, needs to be addressed.
“You know there that, an acquaintance, like somebody you meet out on date or somebody you meet out at a bar. But there also family members, there is roommate friends. Somebody you might have met a couple nights ago so acquaintance doesn't just mean a date situation there is bunch of different categories of acquaintance.”
