The Save Veronica Campaign, an organization joining together in the midst of an adoption custody battle, takes stacks of more than 20,000 signatures on a petition to lawmakers in Charleston and Columbia.
The petition asks lawmakers to revisit the Indian Child Welfare act of 1978 to protect adoptive families. The law, which was written to protect Native American families and keep them with their heritage is the center of a local adoption case that's headed to the state supreme court.
Matt and Melanie Capiobianco, the adoptive parents of 2-year-old Veronica, were forced to hand her over to her biological father on New Year's Eve during a one-hour transition even though she had never met the birth father before.
While in Columbia Tuesday, the organization spoke with Governor Haley who is aware of Veronica's story. She says while she cannot make any decisions on this case, she can communicate with her constituents and ask "what are they doing?"
The governor says being a mother herself, she feels for the Capobianco's.
We'll have an update on the delivery of the petition from SaveVeronica.org to lawmakers tonight on News 2.
