TAMPA, Fla. - Mitt Romney says Newt Gingrich engaged in "potentially wrongful activity" when he worked with former congressional colleagues to push for a prescription drug benefit for Medicare.
Romney on Monday called on his rival for the GOP presidential nomination to release his client list for that period. Gingrich never registered as a federal lobbyist. But after stepping down as House speaker, he continued to advocate on Capitol Hill as he ran a variety of foundations and private groups.
Romney suggested that Gingrich worked for health care companies that could have benefited financially from passage in 2003 of a prescription drug benefit for Medicare.
Romney spoke in Tampa, Fla., hours before he, Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul meet for the first of two debates before Florida's presidential primary on Jan. 31.
