University of South Carolina officials contact Goose Creek about property after story airs on News 2.
On November 29th, News 2 ran a story on the dilapidated Plantation Square Shopping Center. The property is surrounded on all sides by the City of Goose Creek.
Mayor Michael Heitzler had tried to get the owner of the property, The University of South Carolina Foundation, to fix the property up or sell it. The shopping center once had a Food Lion and other businesses, but it has become an eyesore since Food Lion left more than 10 years ago.
Mayor Heitzler contacted News 2 to try and get the word out about the problem. The day after our story aired, the president of USC called City Hall.
Heitzler tells News 2 that the university has now agreed to tear the building down if it didn't have a contract by the end of the year. Heitzler says he does not believe that happened, so it should be coming down soon, “They assured me that they were very concerned about the appearance of the building. They were very concerned about the reputation of the university of South Carolina, the holders of this property, and they want to fix the problem as quickly as possible.”
The school has already accepted a lowest bid to have the property torn down, and Heitzler says he looks forward to that, and seeing the 6 acres of prime real estate sold.
