Charleston Mayor Joe Riley tells News 2 drainage work to repair flooding problems near the market downtown will be up for bid soon.
Mayor Riley says the Septima Parkway construction will create 1100 jobs. Those jobs will be filled between now and the year 2020 as the project to repair the crosstown goes through four phases.
Riley says, “It’s like a wonderful extra dividend of this. We get this serious problem of a federal highway and the drainage, inadequate drainage associated with it solved, and at the same time providing good, solid construction jobs.”
Riley made the announcement Thursday that the state infrastructure bank has approved $88 million for the $154 million dollar project. That means the project is now fully funded. The city and federal government will be paying the balance of the money needed.
That only covers about 20% of the flooding problem. So what about the market area, which can have major flooding as well? Riley says that’s coming soon, “We’ve also been working on the design of the market street drainage improvements. We will go out for competitive bids later this month or early next month for market street.”
Mayor Riley says once that is complete, he will bring a revenue bond proposal to council to move forward with the market street project. That project could begin work as soon as the end of this year.
