Sheriff Al Cannon sent a letter to the State Law Enforcement Division on Wednesday asking state officials to take over the internal investigation surrounding Timothy Shawn McManus's arrest.
The Sheriff's request comes 10 days after he and other deputies followed McManus on a high speed pursuit through Mt. Pleasant. Cannon and other deputies fired at McManus's speeding truck, blowing out his tires to bring the chase to a stop on Steed Creek Road.
Video recorded from one of the deputies dash cams shows officers hitting McManus as they wrestled him to the ground. Two days after the Jan. 30 incident, Cannon told reporters he slapped the suspect as he sat in a Sheriff's car.
"I slapped him with my open hand," Cannon said. "I said 'you could have killed a lot of people out there today,' and I slammed the door."
Any time there's an officer involved shooting, SLED takes over the investigation.
Cannon told SLED agents about the slap and vowed to launch an independent internal investigation on McManus's apprehension.
Now, the Sheriff is reaching out to state officials. In a letter he said, "I do not believe that my agency has the capability of conducting an unbiased internal affairs investigation which would normally ensue following an incident such as this."
SLED's investigations are now ongoing.
