Remains found three weeks ago are positively identified as those belonging to Joe Swinton. Authorities found human remains on Platt Road near St. Stephen where they searched for the missing man in 2010. 47-yr-old Swinton was reported missing nearly two years to the day before his remains were found. "I used to talk to the picture I used to ask him like Joe tell me why did you leave, tell us what happened," Shirley Swinton said. He was a father of five, one of nine brothers, his only sister Shirley cried as she told News 2 he's not coming back. "We thought that he just left and would be back, you know would come back alive, wasn't expecting this," she said. Authorities confirmed Tuesday that remains found January 18th belong to Joe. They were discovered on the same day as their mother's funeral.
"I thank God for showing my mother, you know he probably showed her that morning and she passed," Shirley said. "God gave her the closure before she leave and I thank God for that."
Officials found Swinton's truck shortly after his disappearance in 2010, it wasn't until last month near the same location that a stranger came across his bones.
The coroner's office has not determined the cause of death, but for now the family said they think it was an accident.
"I just don't know," Shirley said. "We had been through a lot but the family triumph, we pull together."
The remains were found outside of where officials searched for Swinton, it's a wooded area that they said was flooded two years ago at the time they were looking for him.
