Car and foot traffic on the Ravenel bridge stood still for more than three hours Thursday afternoon.
The bridge's popular walking and biking path became a place of loitering as police tried to coax Phillip DeClemente out of the Lexus he parked in the middle of the Ravenel's northbound lane.
DeClemente's standoff with police blocked access to the bridge, leaving people who live in Charleston stranded in Mt. Pleasant and vice versa. DeClemente was taken into custody Thursday afternoon around 5pm. He was cited for Reckless Driving by the Charleston County police.
Leonard George and his wife decided to spend Thursday afternoon trekking the bridge, only to have their first walk end really before it began.
"It's just a waiting game for the most part," said George as he waited for police to re-open the walkway. "[We've been] trying to see what's going to happen, that's the story so far."
The bridge finally opened to pedestrians and cyclists around 6:45pm.
