Dash cam videos released by the Charleston County Sheriff's Department show several deputies hitting Timothy McManus as he was being arrested Monday morning.
For 25 seconds, a Sheriff's canine attacked McManus's right arm as other
deputies tried to restrain him.
The incident happened after McManus lead deputies--including Sheriff Al Cannon--on a 20 minute high speed police chase through Mt. Pleasant. McManus and the deputies topped out at speeds close to 125 miles per hour.
On Wednesday, Cannon admitted to slapping McManus once he was in the back of a police cruiser. However, the tapes released Thursday show the actual take down of the suspect.
After McManus was restrained and being ushered into a deputy's car, another deputy is heard saying "good job, guys."
Friday the ACLU of SC issued the following statement to News 2:
"The video is disturbing. The investigation needs to thoroughly probe the appropriateness of the police actions. We question whether there could be any justification for releasing the K-9 in a situation like this."
According to the police report, the suspect "attempted to reach under the front seat area, at which time Lieutenant Williams utilized force to prevent his actions."
During Wednesday's press conference, Sheriff Cannon made it clear that more dire actions could have been used to stop McManus.
"I think that the level of recklessness that he was driving would have justified the use of deadly force," Cannon said.
