“Would have never thought it was Phillip, it took me two hours to get home today. I got home and there were police here and couldn't figure out why police were here. They asked if I knew Phillip. I was like Oh my god what happened to Phillip. I didn't realize it was him on the bridge.”
Teresa Besco lived next to DeClemente for about 7-years. And said, judging by his nature, it is hard to believe that was the man causing the chaos on the Bridge.
Meantime, police wanted some answers about the suspect Thursday evening. We're told investigators spent about an hour around DeClemente's 3-story home. It’s tucked back into a cul-de-sac on, River Otter Court, off of Highway 41 in Mount Pleasant. When News 2 arrived on the scene, they were finishing up, but did not appear to take anything of substance from the house.
Neighbors who share the loosely packed circle, were somewhat guarded when talking about DeClemente, who was arrested on stalking charges back in 2011. One who lived nearby, said she has seen police at the home many times in the past, possibly for domestic issues. DeClemente was not married but we are told he did live with woman there but she moved out a while back.
Another said that DeClemente was unemployed at the time, and their interaction was that, of typical neighbors. And they didn't know of any serious issues going on in his personal life.
Others like Teresa Besco, say its possible his was falling on some hard times-- over the past several months.
“I knew he had a rough year last year a lot going on I'm not sure what was going on, but I knew there was stuff going on. He had his house; everything in his house was up for sale.”
Neighbors also say they haven't seen much of DeClemente recently, but he was seen at home over the past week. It was also discovered that he worked in rescue and volunteers as a SCUBA diver with Charleston County. But a county spokesperson said he has -not- been an active member with rescue for at least a year.
