A Georgetown High School basketball player is recovering after being stabbed at a Georgetown church.
17-year-old Marquise Bessellieu told police that he was stabbed in the parking lot of Georgetown Presbyterian Church after a basketball game in the church's gym Thursday night.
Police arrested 24-year-old Maliek Gibbs of Georgetown for the stabbing.
Bessellieu said that he was playing basketball at the gym when a man, later identified by police as Gibbs, arrived to pick up another person.
Bessellieu said Gibbs took the basketball and Bessellieu commented, "dude took the ball."
Bessellieu said he left the church about 10 minutes later. He said he was approached by the man (Gibbs) who confronted him and eventually stabbed him in the abdomen.
Bessellieu's family said that the teen is recovering after surgery for his injuries. He is facing about 6 weeks of recovery time and will miss the rest of the school year. They are shocked that someone would stab the teenager. They say Bessellieu has never had any trouble with anyone in the past.
Gibbs faced a judge Friday afternoon and was given a $25,000 bond.
In court Gibbs' mother apologized to Bessellieu's mother; saying she understands what she must be going through.
