Charleston firefighters investigate suspicious fire on Cannon

City calls 2 p.m. press conference to discuss fires

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Charleston firefighters are investigating a suspicious fire that damaged a home on Cannon Street early Thursday morning.

The first units to arrive could be heard on their radios reporting the fire burning on the first floor front porch. CFD spokesman Mark Ruppel confirmed that it appears the fire started there, but it's too early to connect it to dozens of suspicious fires on the peninsula over the last eight years.

News 2 's Rebecca Ryan reports, the people who lived in the home are college students, and all of them escaped without injury.

With the investigation underway, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley called a 2 p.m. press conference to discuss the rash of fires. Charleston Fire Chief Tom Carr, and Police Chief Greg Mullen will be there to answer questions.
