It's here, the dog days of summer are upon us, the temperature is starting to steady on the triple digits and Project Cool Breeze is at it again. For the twelfth year in a row, they’re giving away air conditioners and fans to senior citizens in need.
Saturday they gave away 150 air conditioners, more than any amount they’ve given before.
“This program is literally saving lives,” said Representative Wendell Gilliard who created the project. “Today 150 seniors will receive fans and air conditioners today so we're very proud of that.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control, people 65-years-old and older are at greater risk of heat exhaustion. That's why Rep. Gilliard said it's important to help keep them cool during the summer months.
“Check on the seniors no matter whether they're your relatives, neighbors, friends, next door neighbors, this is the time of year you must check on all senior citizens throughout the tri-county in your community,” said Gilliard.
To qualify for Project Cool Breeze, you must be 60-years-old or older and live in the tri-county area. Organizers often get referrals from fire and law officials.
