A very hot and humid day is in store for lower South Carolina with high temperatures expected to approach or exceed the century mark in many areas away from the beaches. Even right along the coast, rare highs in the 90s are possible before the sea breeze provides some relief during the afternoon. These hot temperatures will combine with humid air to produce heat indices in excess of 105 degrees for several hours Tuesday afternoon and evening.
"It is quite possible many areas could see values in excess of 110 degrees for several hours, that's when the heat becomes extremely dangerous," said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Josh Marthers.
When the heat index exceeds 105 degrees, the body begins to feel stress from the heat allowing for heat exhaustion or heat stroke. This stress increases and becomes extremely dangerous when the heat index exceeds 110. Heat stroke becomes a greater risk as the heat index exceeds 110 and approaches 115. Drink plenty of fluids and take frequent breaks. If possible, avoid strenuous work in the outdoors for extended periods of time.
