The Girl Scouts of Coastal South Carolina are having financial problems. The organization owns a number of properties in the palmetto state.
The board of directors is planning on selling off some of their properties to help with the financial problems. One of those properties is Camp Lowcountry. The Girl Scouts have owned that property in Berkeley County since 1963.
The Girl Scouts say that property may have to be sold. The Camp Lowcountry is costly to maintain. Several historic buildings are on the property. The old manor house on the property needs extensive repairs.
News 2 spoke with a lady who was a scout leader back in the 1970's. She used to take girls to Camp Lowcountry. She says to her, closing that camp and allowing someone else to own it would be like driving by her childhood home only to see someone else living there.
Scout officials say they need 4-5 million to get all of their finances to where they need to be. They say they have about 6-8 months before they may be forced to sell the property.
