23-year-old Deangelo Mitchell and his 20-year-old brother Wayne Mitchell were pulled over on November 30th on Clements Avenue in North Charleston.
While in the back of a police car, video catches them discussing drugs. According to police reports, Deangelo is seen on video removing cocaine from his pants and giving them to his younger brother.
Deangelo, who has a long record of previous cocaine arrests, is heard on the video saying he can't afford another strike and "one of us gotta do it."
Wayne Mitchell ingested cocaine and later died at the hospital. Deangelo Mitchell was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine. Deangelo bonded out of jail soon after his arrest.
Police tell News 2 that toxicology results show Mitchell's younger brother died as a result of ingesting cocaine in the back of the police car to protect Mitchell.
Investigators held a press conference Monday and announced they plan to charge Mitchell with manslaughter.
"He died as a result within an hour of eating that cocaine so his older brother wouldn't have to take the charge and go to prison, it's sickening," North Charleston Police Chief Jon Zumalt said. "We're going to hold that brother accountable for what happened to his younger brother."
If you have any information on the whereabouts of Deangelo Mitchell contact police immediately.
