Friday the Dorchester County Coroner told News 2 that an autopsy on the body found Thursday on I-26 confirmed that the cause of death was skull fractures due to being struck by a vehicle. The body had multiple extremity fractures.
The ID of the victim is not clear at this time.
A male body was found by a state Department of Transportation worker around 11:45am Thursday morning. The worker was cutting the grass in the Interstate 26 median between mile markers 176 and 178 when he made the discovery.
The Dorchester County Coroner's Office said the body had been there at least a month and was hit by a large vehicle, possibly even an 18-wheeler.
One westbound lane was closed for nearly an hour as several agencies investigated the area.
The Sheriff, Coroner and Highway Patrol are following several leads, including the possibility that the victim could be the same person dropped off at mile marker 177 by a female on Nov. 13.
