Doctors have begun recommending patients to massage therapy to cure their aches and pains.
Luann Shaw says her doctor sent her to a message therapist when years of teaching and carrying books caught up to her in her 50’s.
“In driving my car, my arm would go to sleep. I couldn't lift a hair dryer. I couldn’t put on makeup,” she explained.
Now she gets bi-weekly massages in Mount Pleasant.
“It just makes my every day living so much more comfortable,” she said.
Jamie Preveux relates. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia last year and started weekly massages to help with the pain.
“If I miss a few times here or there I get to where I can't move,” she said.
Mount Pleasant massage therapist, Mel Moore, said his patients come for treatment of back pain and stress but he works on patients with serious illnesses too.
“I don't think people realize massage can address those issues and maybe even ease the dependence on pain medication,” Mel said.
He explained massage works by releasing trigger points in the muscles that cause tension and by resetting the nervous system. The Mayo Clinic reports more hospitals offer massage to treat stress, depression, anxiety, blood pressure issues, and even cancer. Mel said massage can help patients recover after surgery, flushes the lymphatic system, and boosts the immune system.
“It feels good, but it's also very good for you. I mean, that doesn't happen very often,” Mel joked.
While most look at massage as luxury item, the women who use massage to treat pain said it’s worth the money.
