KIAWAH ISLAND – At approximately 12:15 PM the St. Johns Fire and Rescue Department, Charleston County Emergency Medical Services, Charleston County Rescue, and the Charleston County Sherriff’s Office were dispatched for an elevator incident on Eagle Point Road.
Additional dispatch information provided stated that an “elevator was on a child”. St. Johns Engine 706 arrived on the scene, reporting a child was stuck between an elevator car and the elevator shaft at a residential dwelling.
The child’s leg was lodged between the elevator car and shaft, with the child’s body hanging below the elevator car. The father was holding on to the child’s leg.
St. Johns Engine 706 secured power to the elevator. Two personnel on Engine 706 placed a ladder in the elevator shaft, extending it to the child’s position to secure the child from below. Two other personnel on Engine 706 removed the flooring material from around the child’s leg using hand tools and a chain saw. Crews worked for approximately 25 minutes. Once extricated, the child was slowly lowered to the crew on the ladder and the patient was turned over to Charleston County EMS for treatment and transport.
The child was conscious and alert during the entire incident.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.
