The South Carolina Highway Patrol says, one person was killed when a car trying to "elude police" on Highway 17 South at Highway 41 in Mount Pleasant, crashed head-on into an 18-wheeler.

SCHP LCpl. Paul Brouthers said, the vehicle was going the wrong way on 17 just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, and the truck was just about stopped at the time of the collision.

The police report says, an officer attempted to contact the people inside a vehicle parked at the gas station at Hwy 17 and Hwy 41. The officer said in the report, he noticed the vehicle parked in that spot for more than an hour.

According to the report, as the officer talked with the man and woman inside the car, the driver put the car in reverse and backed out, nearly running over the officer's legs. He took-off Southbound on Hwy 17.

Another officer heading North, turned around to conduct a traffic stop.

Police say the driver, 49-year-old Ricky Bostic, then made a u-turn and started driving in the wrong direction and  collided with the truck shortly afterward.

Brouthers says, the passenger was killed, and medics took the driver to the hospital.

The victim is 42-year-old Mary Dew of Horry County.  An autopsy report reveals that she died from blunt force injuries.

Bostic is listed in fair condition at MUSC.
