College of Charleston students saved a man’s life during the Cooper River Bridge Run.
According to the College of Charleston Public Safety Director, a middle aged man, who had known heart problems, collapsed due to a cardiac arrest.
Student volunteers with the Public Safety Department were able to respond to the call before any other agencies could arrive. Students gave the man CPR and connected him to an AED which restarted the man’s heart.
Before the man was taken to MUSC students said he was able to stand-up and talk with them.
The group started in 1995 after a student died on campus. There are 45 volunteers who are trained as first responders, EMTs and paramedics.
The group usually responds to the calls at the College of Charleston, but also assists Charleston County during big events like the Bridge Run and other festivals.
