A South Carolina sheriff says a deputy has been hurt and a man shot to death following a fight at a pool room.

Multiple media outlets reported the shooting happened about 2 a.m. Monday in Orangeburg.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams says a 10-year veteran officer was treated and released from a hospital for injuries he suffered in the fight. Williams did not release the officer's name.

The sheriff says the deputy is on leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates.

Coroner Samuetta Marshall says 35-year-old Johnathan Myron Stokes of Orangeburg died after being shot in the head.

Williams says deputies were confronted by a large number of people and one of them was beating the deputy with his own flashlight when the officer pulled his gun and fired.
