Old Man Winter is definitely making his presence known across much of the United States Monday morning as temperatures fall well below zero in the Upper Plains with teens and twenties all the way to the South Carolina coast. The frigid air mass will even threaten the Florida citrus groves with a hard freeze.

A weather pattern known as a "Greenland Block (click for more info)" is allowing for a continuous discharge of Arctic air into the United States. This weather pattern is expected to persist through the week with daytime highs in the 40s and overnight lows in the 20s across the Lowcountry.

By Thursday and Friday, snow could be flying through the air in some unusual spots across the Southeastern United States ahead of an even colder air mass.

During extended periods of unusually cold weather the risk for bursting pipes increases. Be sure to protect exposed pipes and do not allow indoor temperatures to fall below 60 degrees. Check in frequently with elderly neighbors or family members and protect pets from the wind.
