DHEC announced Friday that it's lifted the recreational and fishing advisory issued this week for a 10-mile stretch of the Ashley River in Charleston County.

Laboratory results from water samples collected from the area upstream and downstream of Hunley Park indicate that bacteria have returned to normal levels.

Bacteria levels were elevated following a sewer overflow earlier this week, in which an estimated 206,000 gallons of sewage flowed into a storm drain feeding the river.

All approved shellfish harvesting areas in the Stono River and Schooner Creek have also reopened.

"These areas are now open for harvesting after being closed as a precaution due to a sewage spill in the Ashley River," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's shellfish sanitation program.
