Are you a parent concerned about your child texting and driving?
A new company has developed software to help empower you to protect your children in the dangerous on line and wireless world.
Jim Huffman, owns the Web Safety branch in the Lowcountry.
He says, "Websafety is a company that produces software that detects and prevents strangers from approaching kids on their computers and cell phones.
It stops cyber bullying, sexting, obscenity porn, and it even stops kids from texting while driving. Texting while driving is now the number one killer of teenagers, even above drunk driving."
Huffman says, "It's brand new revolutionary technology that downloads the software on cell phones. It's saving kids lives. The software is downloaded on two things, one the cell phone, or the child's PC. When it's downloaded on the cell phone, it prevents the sexting, cyber bullying, suicide talk and things like that. One of the neatest features is that it syncs with the GPS system of the phone, so when the phone starts moving ten-miles-an hour or more when it's in a car it disables the texting function of the phone. So now the teenager can't text while they're driving."
It then sends a message back to the parent's cellphone or computer.
Huffman says, "It even takes into consideration the stop lights and stop signs. So after you stop, it takes a couple of minutes to kick back on. It also monitors your child's speed while driving. We're just trying to protect children. A lot of people didn't grow up in the cell phone era. A lot of this net lingo is new to the parents. This kind of puts the parents back in control. Websafety puts the parents back in control of their kids a little bit."
Parent Sarah Johnson calls it added security. She says, "It's control not in a way where it's obsessive controlling, but in a way that it's safe."
Even though she has a ways to go before her three year old son Jacob uses a cell phone, computer or gets behind the wheel, Johnson says, "It makes me feel safe. It makes me feel like Jacob is safe, and I have the chance to protect him in any kind of way."
The software for the cell phone costs 149-dollars, and for both the cell phone and home computer, it's 249-dollars. The software has to be renewed annually. Huffman says they plan to set up a booth at the upcoming Kids Fair in Charleston on March 14th.
