A South Carolina man walking along a road has died after he was struck by a sheriff's deputy's car.

Multiple media outlets reported 74-year-old Anton Hornung Sr. of York died after being hit around 1 a.m. Sunday by a York County deputy's car on state Highway 901.

Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth says 26-year-old deputy Clifton Conant was driving the patrol car.

Conant has been placed on administrative leave while the crash is investigated. Sheriff Bruce Bryant says Conant has been with the sheriff's department nearly three years. He was not responding to a call when the man was hit.

Coroner Sabrina Gast says Hornung died at the scene from trauma. Conant was not hurt. No charges have been filed.
