Sullivan's Island residents concerned about closing bridge for repairs

» 2 Comments | Post a Comment

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND-A major make over is on its way to the Ben Sawyer Bridge but not everyone's thrilled.

"Well of course it will affect traffic,' said James Law, DOT Spokesman. "But you got the IOP connector. You still got access out of Sullivan's Island itself."

But is that going to be good enough? Some local business owners as well as residents aren't so sure. Starting Saturday, the bridge as well as Ben Sawyer Boulevard; the main road leading in and out of Sullivan's Island will be out of action for at least ten days due to repairs.

"We are hoping weather permitting we will finish ahead of time," said Law. "But we will wait and see."

But waiting and seeing is never a good answer for someone waiting in a lot of traffic.

To be fair, the timing isn't all that horrible. It's not tourist season nor is the weather all that great but business is still business. And a lot of places are already bracing for a lack of customers

"I think it would have been better had this come earlier in the year or happen when it should have occurred in December, said Beth McKie, a waitress on Sullivan's Island. "But in the end we are getting a new bridge and it's only supposed to be for ten days. "
