NORTH CHARLESTON-With most of the nation still suffering from the effects of a grueling depression, things in North Charleston are starting to look up.
We've grown a lot in the last year," said Mayor Keith Summey with a proud smile.
So much so that Friday Mayor Summey announced a one thousand dollar pay increase to all city workers.
"It's important that we let every cog in the wheel know of their significance of the opperation in the city," he explained.
To be clear, that's a 1 thousand dollar bonus for everyone. Cops, fireman, even secretaries. The raise is deigned to help lower level workers just as much if not more so than their experienced coworkers.
"We wanted to make sure the ones in the lowest level were the ones that get the biggest help," said Mayor Summey
But around the city, some questioned the mayors decision. Especially with an economy where things can change instantly.
"As a fireman and police men just coming in(and getting a bigger boost than more experienced ones)...i can't see them jumping up," said North Charleston resident Leroy Bwan.
But to that, Mayor Summey says its important to believe, the worst is in the past.
"I think the greatest thing they should be surprised at is that we are no longer in an economic standstill," said the Mayor.
The pay raise takes effect starting January of 2011.
