Two North Carolina teenagers are charged with first-degree murder in the death of a South Carolina woman struck by a rock thrown into a car from an overpass.
23-year-old passenger Alicia Thomas of Spartanburg was killed when a rock crashed through the windshield as the car passed under a bridge on the Highway 74 Bypass near Rockingham on Sunday night.
16-year-old Cody Chavis of Rockingham and a 15-year-old are charged. The 15-year-old's identity cannot be released because of his age.
Thomas was born and raised in Clio, S.C. She recently moved to Spartanburg to be with her mother, Henrietta Staggers. Staggers was driving the car when the rock came through the windshield.
The family was driving back to Spartanburg Sunday night after visiting family for Easter.
Thomas leaves behind two sons, ages 5 and 6. Staggers says the hardest part is trying to explain to her grandsons that their mother is not coming home again.
Staggers says her daughter did not have insurance and the family is seeking donations to help cover funeral expenses. If you would like to help, go to any branch of Wachovia Bank and tell an employee you would like to donate to Henrietta Staggers' account.
