CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - It's the 20th anniversary of the worst natural disaster in modern times in South Carolina.

Hurricane Hugo, a Category 4 storm, smashed ashore at Charleston with its 135 mph winds 20 years ago on Monday.

Charleston city spokeswoman Barbara Vaughn says there are no city observances of the occasion.

On the first anniversary of the storm, state and local leaders gathered at Charleston City Hall for a candlelight observance. Ironically, that event was cut short by a thunderstorm.

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. says that, despite the storm and the devastation that took months and, in some cases, years to repair, Charleston is stronger and more beautiful than at any time in its history.

News 2 will air a 30-minute special tonight on NBC at 7:30 pm looking back at the deadly storm. Also, this morning, Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler will join Kelly Golden on 94.3 WSC for a live radio chat remembering the storm.
