As President Obama tried to assure a joint session of congress, and the nation that illegal immigrants would not be covered by his health plan, South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson yelled 'you lie'.
The outburst came during the President's pivotal speech on health care to a joint session of congress Wednesday night.
According to House rules, that is a violation, and immediately fellow Republicans began calling on Wilson to apologize.
The congressman issued the following statement late Wednesday night:
“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”
