The fight between South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer and Gov. Mark Sanford took on a different tone after accusations that Sanford supporters are spreading rumors that Bauer is gay.
In an interview with News 2 on Friday, Bauer said "it's a silly question."
Republican State Senator Jake Knotts charged in a sent a letter to state legislators Wednesday that Sanford's supporters are spreading the rumors.
Bauer denied to The State newspaper in June that he's gay.
"I don't think it's a proper question," Bauer told News 2 on Friday. "I think it's a little bit ridiculous and it's sad that politics has gotten to that."
Last week, Bauer called for Sanford's resignation in the midst of a scandal over the Governor's affair with an Argentine woman and an ethics investigation into his state-funded travel.
"I want to talk about real issues," Bauer said.
