Police arrested 26 students for fighting at North Charleston High School on Wednesday.
North Charleston police said they responded to a call of a fight in progress at the school.
Once on scene, officers discovered several fights among students taking place in the cafeteria.
North Charleston officers along with assistance from Charleston County Sheriff Deputy’s were able to break up the fights and restore order to the cafeteria.
As a result, a total of 26 students (13 juvenile and 13 adult age) were arrested and charged with disturbing school.
One student complained of stomach pains and was transported to MUSC for treatment.
Police said that during their investigation, they learned that Wednesday’s incident stemmed from an ongoing feud between students from rival neighborhoods and spill over in to the school.
The school was placed on lock down during the time of the incident.
Charleston County School District released this statement:
First and foremost, student safety is the district's utmost priority, and every step will be taken to maintain safe, secure learning environments in our schools.
Today, staff at NCHS--including full-time School Resource Officers and Student Concern Specialists--acted quickly to contain and isolate the fighting between groups of students. The cafeteria was fully staffed and supervised at the time. Police were called immediately. As a precaution, the school was put on administrative lockdown and all afterschool activities were cancelled.
CCSD has a very proactive, clear, and progressive discipline policy--connected with a Code of Conduct signed by all families--that does not tolerate violent behavior. To be sure, the arrested students had different levels of involvement, and staff will pursue suspension or expulsion depending on what the evidence shows. For now, all arrested students have been suspended, and further decisions will be made in accordance with district policy designed to maintain safe, orderly schools and hold students to excellent standards of behavior.
It is unfortunate when community and neighborhood issues spill into schools and spark conflicts. We must work together--schools, parents, community members, and the police--to ensure student safety and address issues that compromise safety. We will be placing extra supports and security at the school in the coming days, including help from district security staff, additional Student Concern Specialists, and North Charleston Police.
