Charleston Water System's Board of Commissioners on Thursday approved an average 5% rate increase for its water and sewer customers.

For the typical residential customer who lives in the City of Charleston, the rate increase amounts to an additional $1.50 on the combined monthly water and sewer bill.

Residential water customers who live outside of the city limits will see an increase of up to $1.55 on their monthly water bill.

The new rate takes effect January 1st.

The increase was approved as part of Charleston Water System's 2010 Budget, which includes cuts and the elimination of 20 vacant jobs.
