Charleston County Environmental Management conducts a study Wednesday where it will sort through up to 12,000 pounds of trash.
The trash will be sorted into 27 categories, including paper, plastic, recyclables, food waste and electronic waste.
It will be analyzed over a 5-day period.
The trash samples come from about 45 truck loads of garbage from specific points throughout Charleston County.
The findings will be used to determine "future program directions," according to Environmental Management officials.
The waste composition study is designed to better understand the make-up and disposal patters of solid waste in the county.
