Local Iraq War Veteran shares thoughts on Fort Hood Shooting

»  Comments | Post a Comment

John Grisillo military resume speaks for itself.

Air born ranger, infantry officer, a year spent in Iraq.

And time spent in Fort Hood. Yes, that Fort Hood. The same place that saw 12 people die and 30 others injured at the hands of a single gunman.(At last count)

"I am shocked something like this could happen there. It's a tragic day for the army and the country overall"

Tragic but could something like this have been prevented? According to reports federal law enforcement officials say Major Nidal Malik Hasan the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats. Grisillo believes action should have been taken.

"There were signs yes, but at the same time, I know we are significantly pinched in the mental health profession in the military."

On Thursday evening, different theories had already been flying around about the gunman's motives. Hasan was expected to be deployed overseas very soon. Some believe he cracked under pressure, others say he was unhappy about the United States role in Iraq. Some have even raised the question of whether or not Hasan himself was a terrorist. Grisillo has heard the rumors but he believes the gunmen was not a closet terrorist. Still that does not mean he fully believes he acted alone.

"With two handguns, there is no way he killed all those people. Unless he had help or another weapon has yet to be located. It's still very early but I'm expecting there's a lot more to this story than we know right now"
