ArcelorMittal has sent out warn notices to its employees that the plant will go idle within 60 days if the economy doesn't turn around.
James Sanderson, president of the United Steel Workers Local 7898, says he received his warn notice around 4:00 Monday afternoon.
The notice advised of a pending "mass layoff." According to Sanderson 252 hourly workers will be laid off for an unspecified amount of time. In the notice, the company said the layoff will begin July 12, 2009 and is temporary.
Sanderson says the notice told workers if the mill goes idle, they will be entitled to 80 percent of their pay for up to two years. The company will also pay for their medical insurance for up to 30 months.
A small group of workers is expected to continue working at the site to protect the company's assets and equipment for startup.
