It’s that time of year we all crave, and girls gear up for. “Every penny counts,“ says upstate Girl Scout Council leader Lee Ann Maley. She knows the pennies from peanut butter patties and thin mints add up to big bucks for local troops. “it’s money that girls have planned for what kind of activities they want to do.“
The last big push happened just this past weekend, when some local scouts lined up the Bi-Lo off West Wade Hampton Boulevard in Greer, South Carolina to sell their last batch of cookies. Police say they got an unexpected customer. “He asked them a question about cookies, grabbed their money and took off.“ The suspected cookie crook made off with $300, a big bite for the local troop. They were counting on the cash to pay for programs the entire year. “Any loss to them is a big loss.“
Maley says the incident is one reason to look at safety, and another reminder that in these tough times, even the sweetest of sellers are a target. “The way the economy is, a lot of things happen we wouldn’t expect.“
Greer Police have yet to catch the thief. They’re hoping surveillance tape might help to identify the man. If you have any information on the case, call Greer P.D. At (864) 848-2155.
