The USS Freedom, a Littoral Combat Ship, will arrive in Charleston for a port visit Monday.
The crew plans to open the ship for public visits Tuesday, June 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"We’re looking forward to visiting Charleston," said Cmdr. Michael Doran. "It’s definitely a pleasure and honor to show off the ship to the people of a city that has been such a great friend and supporter of the Navy through the years!"
Freedom was commissioned Nov. 6, 2008, in Milwaukee.
Here's how the Navy describes the ship:
"A fast, agile, and high-technology surface combatant, Freedom will act as a platform for launch and recovery of manned and unmanned vehicles. Its modular design will support interchangeable mission packages, allowing the ship to be reconfigured for antisubmarine warfare, mine warfare or surface warfare missions on an as-needed basis -- adapting as the tactical situation demands. The ships will also feature advanced networking capability to share tactical information with other Navy aircraft, ships, submarines and joint units."
