New parking decks give electric drivers a charge

A San Diego company is trying to advance renewable energy transportation.

The goal: Find an eco-friendly way to recharge electric vehicles.

Robert Noble is the CEO of Envision Solar, which just launched "Clean Charge," a hybrid/electric car recharging station.

"There's so many companies now that are coming out with great electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and where are you gonna plug them in?" asks Noble.

"Clean Charge" is still in the development phase, but Noble says the future is here.

Solar trees have been built on top of a parking deck at the University of California, San Diego. They provide shade to the cars below, and are soaking up the sun's rays.

Noble says in the future each one of these trees will have an outlet. Maybe two. So that solar electric cars can just plug right in."

"The sun hits the solar panel, the PV panel and then electricity is produced, then it trickles into the grid," he explains.

It would take several hours to fully charge an electric car now, but Noble says fast charge systems are on the way.

"It may be two, three years when we start seeing plenty of opportunity to charge in our electric vehicles."

So how would the driver pay for a solar "fill up?"

That would be up to the company or organization where the "Clean Charge" stations are built.
