Professor Seth Mallios of San Diego State University is a truth seeker. "We're gonna keep digging until we hit bottom," Mallios said.
He doesn't rely on books. "I don't really believe the written record that much," Mallios said.
And in this latest pursuit of the past, he and his students are digging several feet below one of San Diego's most infamous backyards.
"And so, if any place were to be haunted, there's justification for it here," Mallios said.
San Diego's oldest brick building, the Whaley House and has been called the country's most haunted.
Before the 150 year old home was built, there were hangings in the yard.
Ever since, some claim the ghost of Yankee Jim Robbinson can be heard walking around the house.
Story after story, people say they've seen things or heard things one moment, and the next, they're gone.
Meat cleavers swing.
Strange images show up in photographs.
And then, there's the story about the Whaley's daughter, Violet. She tried to kill herself by jumping off the roof into that well being dug up today.
"She didn't succeed, but three weeks later, she shot and killed herself in the privy, which is the other area that we're digging," Mallios said.
While legend says the gun may still be buried here, they seem to be finding everything, but they haven't seen any ghosts.
