Police in Maine looking for a sex offender from South Carolina

Police at the University of Maine at Farmington are seeking a 19-year-old South Carolina sex offender whom they suspect traveled nearly 1,200 miles by bus to meet a female student he had contacted through an online gaming site.

Police said 19-year-old Robert James Tilton, of Clarendon, S.C., gained access to a locked residence hall after giving a false name to a security officer. Investigators said they later found two large knives hidden in the area where Tilton entered the building.

Tilton, who is wanted for questioning, is listed on the South Carolina Sex Offender Registry for a 2006 conviction of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a 6-year-old.
