A new book, "Don't Go There: The Travel Detective's Essential Guide to the Must-miss Places of the World," tells readers to stay away from North Charleston. The book by the "Today Show's" travel editor, Peter Greenberg, lists the city as one of the places in the world you don't want to visit.
Mayor Keith Summey calls Greenberg a "jerk" and calls the book "unfair." Summey is now urging North Charleston citizens to boycott businesses that advertise on the "Today Show."
Summey says he would not accept an apology from Greenberg. He would rather the writer come to North Charleston and learn about the positive aspects of the city.
Greenberg uses crime as a basis for warning readers to stay away from the city. In the book, Greenberg makes a list of communities to skip. Those communities include Chicora Cherokee, Ferndale and Charleston Farms. They are all known for being high-crime areas. Summey says spotlighting those areas is not fair to the good people who live there.
Greenberg issued a written statement Friday as he traveled.
The statement is as follows:
"I stand by the figures in my story, which were supplied to us by none other than the chief of police, Jon Zumalt as well as press relations officer Spencer Pryor. This was also confirmed by the FBI. Before they rush to judgement, I encourage viewers to read the book first and not take paragraphs out of context. Last but not least, I do not work for the travel industry or the chamber of commerce, but I do report ON the travel industry. This is a distinct and essential difference."
