Winter storms hit both coasts

Winter storms hit both coasts

Severe storms battered both coasts Wednesday with a wet, wintry mix and the south with heavy rain.

In the northeast, snow and a layer of ice glazed trees, power lines and roads from Pennsylvania to New England.

It is the second major storm for Massachusetts residents in just a matter of weeks.

“There is paranoia around here, just slightest wind or freezing rain, wires coming down. Still a lot of loose ones,“ said one Massachusetts resident.
Snowplows cleared the roads as best they could.

In Hartford, Connecticut, freezing rain and ice knocked out power to thousands and tested drivers
Near Albany, New York, even common sense couldn’t keep some vehicles from skidding off roads.

The cold snap also caused airport delays and cancellations, as travelers waited for icy planes and runways to be cleared.

The mess is a result of cold air colliding with a rain-packed warm front moving up from the Atlantic states.

In the south, too much rain has flooded areas and closed roads.

In Rome, Georgia, a river overflowed its banks, and flooded a nearby football field.

In the pacific northwest, flooding and the threat of mudslides and avalanches are taxing residents, already soggy from weeks of heavy rain and snow melt runoff.

That same storm is once again, bringing heavy snow to the Rockies.

In Colorado, interstate 70 was closed in both directions at the Vail pass due to avalanche warnings.

Forecasters say it won’t be the last round as extreme winter weather keeps its grip on the country.
