National Weather Service confirms tornado in Hanahan

Damage from Saturday storms

HANAHAN, S.C. (AP) - The National Weather Service has confirmed that a weak, small-scale tornado touched down this weekend in the marshes of a South Carolina city less than 20 miles from Charleston.

Meteorologist John Jelsema said Tuesday that no one was injured by the tornado that struck Hanahan.

Several homes were damaged as trees toppled and strong winds whipped through Saturday. But officials think the damage was caused by the storm that spawned the tornado, not the tornado itself.

Authorities say the tornado moved along a marsh for a fourth of a mile around 6:48 p.m. Saturday, stirring winds of up to 85 mph.

Downed power lines left at least 3500 people without power after the storms.
