COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Freshman quarterback Reid McCollum has

left South Carolina, after enrolling in class earlier this month.

Athletic department spokesman Steve Fink says tonight that

McCollum will return in the summer with the rest of the freshman

class.

McCollum helped Summerville High reach the state championship

game.

McCollum played this fall despite going through several

tragedies.

In June, Summerville assistant coach Louis Mulkey was one of

nine Charleston firefighters killed in a furniture store fire. Then

in October, McCollum's close friend Cassidy Pendley was among seven

college students who died in a beach house fire.
